Organic Deodorant-is it right for you?

Organic Deodorant is Good for your Health & the Environment!

Going green is a personal choice many in our society are making. Going green is not only about living healthier but also about making choices that are better for the environment. As with any lifestyle choice the key is in making informed choices that are right for you and your family. In households that are looking past going green with their food choices to other organic household products including cleaning and personal care items, deodorants and antiperspirants often are overlooked.
While a deodorant stick may seem harmless, traditional deodorants and antiperspirants are loaded with chemicals that are not good for the skin or your health and that are not good for the environment. Deodorants focus simply on combating the odor caused by bacteria that forms in dark, moist areas like the arm pit. The sweat itself actually does not have a smell. It is the bacteria the causes the smell.
Antiperspirants focus on preventing the sweat. Traditional antiperspirants use aluminum as the key active ingredient. The aluminum is absorbed by the skin into the sweat ducts causing them to swell and block the sweat from being released. Without the moisture released into the arm pit area the bacteria cannot form and the related odor is prevented.
Research and health studies regarding the active ingredient in antiperspirants, aluminum, and the chemicals and perfumes used in traditional deodorants are inconclusive at this point. While the chemicals and perfumes are known to irritate sensitive skin like that found in the arm pit area, causing dryness, itching and in some cases rashes to develop. Studies do also suggest other health concerns.
Aluminum is a known neuro toxin. Aluminum has been linked to a variety of degenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s. Aluminum in larger quantities can cause liver damage and may be a contributing factor in the development breast cancer as it is absorbed by the lymph nodes located just under the skin’s surface in the arm pits. While studies are not conclusive, they due cause reason for concern.
As a result many consumers are opting for a greener option, organic deodorant. Organic deodorants are all natural, plant based and do not contain aluminum, alcohol or artificial perfumes and chemicals that frequently cause irritation. Products that are labeled organic must contain at least 95% organic ingredients, containing a minimal amount of chemical ingredients.
There are several types of organic deodorant and antiperspirants:
Crystal Deodorant – Crystal deodorant uses stones that contain a naturally occurring from of aluminum in which the molecules are too large to be absorbed by the skin. This deodorant is applied as a liquid spray from a pump bottle. The deodorant prevents odor from bacteria in the sweat from developing but does not stop the perspiration.
Deodorant Sprays – Deodorant sprays are an option aimed at combating sweat odor. They often contain tea tree oil, witch hazel, baking soda and other essential oils. This type of deodorant comes in a pump spray bottle to apply the deodorant to the skin. EO Products Organic Spray Deodorant is an example of a spray deodorant that is effective in reducing body odor.
Deodorant Balms – Deodorant balms come in a solid ‘stick’ form. Active ingredients may include cocoa butter, coconut oil, and or shea butter combined with cornstarch and essential oils to deodorize and moisturize the sensitive skin in the arm pit area. Nourish Organic Deodorant balm is an example of deodorant balm that is 100% natural and is USDA Certified Organic.
Choosing a type of deodorant is a personal choice. Some prefer the application of one type over another. For those with sensitive and dry skin in the arm pit area the balm will provide moisturizing benefits that the sprays will not. The crystal deodorant, even though the aluminum molecules are not absorbed by the skin, has the best results at minimizing sweat as naturally as possible. For those struggling with excessive sweat and dampness this may be a good choice for your needs. Still other consumers prefer the fresh feel of the deodorant spray and the pleasant fragrance of the essential oil used in their deodorant of choice.
Going Green is a choice to work towards living sustainably. While some may argue whether or not going green actually has a positive impact on climate change or energy and oil costs, one common area of agreement is that green living reduces environmental pollution. The pollution of the chemicals absorbed by our bodies from food and products such as deodorants also pollutes the environment. When we discard the antiperspirant container the unused aluminum and chemicals are absorbed back into the environment via the landfill that it is disposed of in, further polluting the environment. Choosing an organic products such as a deodorant is better for the environment, healthier for your body and often less expensive than traditional deodorant and antiperspirant choices.
The choice to go green impacts all areas of the household from food and supplements to household products to bath and body products. Choosing to live a green lifestyle is a healthy choice for the physical body and at the same time reduces the chemical impacts and damage to our environment and reduces waste. Caring for our family’s physical wellbeing and for the environment that surrounds us is a positive choice for our current generation and generations to come.
